The Marion Christian Church is celebrating its remarkable 180-year history since its establishment in 1843. Additionally, the church is unveiling a significant $1,800,000 restoration project, marking its recovery from the devastating 2020 Derecho, as reported by KCRG.
Rev. Gary Sneller, Co-Pastor of Interim Ministries, detailed the severity of the damage, stating, “A massive tree directly hit and punctured the roof of our education building. This caused a wind tunnel effect that blew away the stained glass windows in the sanctuary, leading to extensive wind and water damage throughout the structure.”
Rev. Sneller further conveyed the church community’s admirable unity and support during this trying period. He told KCRG, “Thanks to the congregation’s unwavering support and generous contributions, we managed to fund the entire recovery without the need for loans.”
Additionally, Rev. Tammy Cameron Buseman, Co-Pastor of Interim Ministries, emphasized the community’s hands-on involvement in the church’s restoration. “The dedication and skills the members displayed – from painting to demolition and refurbishment – made a significant difference in our rebuilding efforts,” she mentioned to KCRG.
Rev. Sneller revealed that the church’s leadership also used this restoration as a unique opportunity for improvement. “We redesigned some rooms for versatility, allowing them to be adapted for various classes and meetings,” he said to KCRG.
Concluding his insights with KCRG, Rev. Sneller reflected on the congregation’s undeniable resilience, stating, “This period, despite its challenges, brought us closer. The adversities of the storm made us come together, and I believe we emerged stronger as a congregation.”
